The Templar Limited Edition Medieval Sword (Oakeshott Type Xa)
The Knights Templar were a monastic military order formed at the end of the First Crusade with the mandate of protecting Christian pilgrims on route to the Holy Land, naming themselves "The Knights of the Temple of Jerusalem." Never before had a group of secular knights banded together and taken the monastic vows. Although originally a small group of nine knights, they quickly gained fame largely due to the backing of Bernard of Clairvaux and his "In Praise of the New Knighthood."
The Templars' fame and wealth grew throughout the time of the subsequent Crusades, until at last, threatened by their wealth and influence, King Philip of France had all the Templars arrested on the grounds of heresy on October 13th, 1307.
This sword is a tribute to those famous warrior monks.
The Templar has a blade with little profile taper and a spade shaped point.
This is a blade with a very long and rather deep fuller, which makes the sword rather light despite its impressive dimensions.
The pommel is of Oakeshott type H, a thick disc with chamfered edges. The cross is of style 5: flat arms that flare in width at the ends. This combination of pommel and cross with a long and fairly broad blade makes for an absolutely classic sword.
Such a weapon of understated elegance and uncompromising character could have accompanied a crusader to the holy land.
